Tip: If you want the long fibres, use a flax plant with the spikey leaves which stand up well, also the more purple the edge, generally, the stronger the free fibre.
The soft draping flax is better for using for baskets and mats.

Note that there is a very good reason for not smoking or eating while working with formium tenax - it will give you very bad stomach cramps and the runs.

Shells actually work as well or better than knives when freeing the fibre, then you don't need to ret the NZ flax which would weaken it.

You can get prepared fibre from Foxten Flax museum
and may even get rope if your lucky

Also note that in some respects the build and nature of the net
is self strengthining thus as long as the base is strong the net
is strong
