What I want is the 3 legged thing to hold a pot over or next to a fire. As to what it should look like I am less sure. Does anyone have any pictures of trivets?

Does not seem difficult, let's talk dimensions and the level of fancy that you like.
Diameter of the ring under the pot
Length, number and shape of legs
Handles?
How many, and level of fancy.
Send me a closer picture, dimensions and I'll send you back a sketch and what I think it will take to make it.

250mm diameter 250mm high. No handles required.
One thing I would change is that the support bars on mine are attached to the bottom of the ring and will eventually burn out and want to drop off. I would put them on the top in future. I could use a couple about half this size; 150mm diameter and 100mm high.

Trivet wise I think the best I've seen was Dee's one made from 6 Clydesdale shoes.

Hi all,
This is the trivet I've just made for Gregor. The full details of construction are in the Flickr set description. It is forged and riveted. I used 6mm round stock for the rivet blanks, so it's nice and sturdy. Legs are adjustable by bending them so they are "just right" depending on the fire you have at the time!
