lol. Very nice. Good choreography and you can tell they've really put some thought into the actual weapons themselves. *gasp* 'bout time someone did.

'nother god one for you:

St Valentines Day on Sunday, February 14th, this weekend and named for an Ancient Roman from the 3rd Century. Don't forget.

And to get you in the mood tonight at 10.30pm "Sex in the Ancient World" on The History Channel SKY73. History's earliest version of "The Joy of Sex", an Egyptian Sex Manual 2000years before the famous Kama Sutra of Ancient India.

Rob, how about just the one post, in just the one (appropriate) thread (ie, not this one), okay?

Many of us don't have Sky, or just don't give damn, and would prefer a higher signal to noise ratio. The repeats are irritating.

NOT looking to get flamed or anything, but I find that of late I get bored very quickly with choreography.

Especially choreo like this that goes on and on and goes nowhere.

Lightsaber fights seem particularly prone to it.

So I guess what I'm saying is that I applaud the time, effort and practise that has gone into these very swish lightsaber fights, but am not particularly thrilled by the fights themselves.

What's missing?

I suppose it is a style thing. but I am puzzled by the fondenss these fights have for the "turn in a stylish circle while the other guy stops for an instant and watches me do it" move.

If someone tried to do that in a fight with me using sword-like weapons I would cut his spine in two, or neatly split his liver.

I will have to watch it again to see what they are doing about this.

In other words, don't turn your back in a fight, it is a silly thing to do.

Because Darth Maul does it lots.

I turn my back in swordfights.

Sometimes I get hit for it, but not as often as I'd expect to...

Feels good though.

I suppose it feels good to pull off a flamboyant move and get away with it. I was taught swordfighting by a dance teacher, and while he could be fancy if he chose to be at his level of skill, he taught us to punish fancy-shmancy moves with a veangeance.

Turn your back to him and you were a dead-man dancing.

I got away with a full turn once, but that was after along time in his teaching. I even managed to turn the tables on him once. I was using a pole-arm, and him with a two-handed sword.

I tripped and went to my knees, being confident he went for a full turn as he closed for the kill. I went to all fours as he turned, the sword went over my head and I push-up rose off from the floor with my arms and pulled a nice sharp backhand blade into his face as I came up with the pole in my hands.

Punish flamboyance! Make it hurt! The only place for a move not immediately focused on killing your opponent is in the movies.

Incidentally, he really enjoyed that death.

"I was being fancy, huh?" "Dead right you were!"

I'm sorry to hear that Kerry and if there is something on The History Channel that you don't want to miss, feel free to come round to mine to catch it OK. IMO the documentary channels are an easy and excellent resource to the amateur Historian, dedicated reenactor or Pagan on an otherwise busy schedule.

Horse-Apples. Very Happy

The only thing better than a good hit, is a good stylish hit.

Far - far - far too many spins. Apart from looking pretty for the ignorant, they had no value. They were actually annoying after a while. I couldn't keep watching the first one.
The second one was a little better, but that had lots of spins too. But it also had high kicks: no wonder they both died - neither of them had the nous to chop the kicker's legs off.

Interestingly, the one I suggested was done by 2 3rd degree black belts. *shrug*

As regards style, flamboyance, swank, pizazz or whatever...my thoughts have have been the same on that for years. The only thing better than beating someone, is to beat them and look good doing it. Then again, I'm a small guy and I rely on every trick in the book.

"Tough" men stand and take a solid punch to shatter their opponents morale. I've always been more a fan of moving out of the way slightly with a disdainful look on my face. Working as a bouncer, you'd be amazed how often that one actually worked for me with larger guys and a crowd. Style or flamboyance, used properly, is more about mentality, it's psychological. No one ever wants to fight the biggest guy in a group...and no one ever wants to take on the little guy who just dropped that big guy in 3 seconds and laughed (or made it look effortless) while he did it.

The thing missing from most choreo'd (especially lightsabre) fights is a sense of strength, of the honest desire to step in and gut someone. It's this same thing that makes WWE actually work. The fights aren't choreographed, only set moves and the finale. With this in mind, the two athletes are then able to go at it hammer and tongs and (even partly choreo'd) can provide more action, more stimulus, more sense of the blood being up.
