How about the best way for a footsoldier to take down a rider or his mount.

Not that most techniques could be used safely in what we do, but was there any sort of study/training in anti cavalry tactics for indervdual/small units?

There are heaps of them. Ranging from attacking the horse's lower legs with the intention of bringing both it and the rider down through to a much safer choreographed takedown of the rider involvng three footcrew.

Obviously any tactic that has the potential to injure a horse cannot be used so "real battle tactics" while an interesting side topic are out. My only comment on real battle tactics are that horses are big animals that don't die easily and once down or injured will thrash about a lot so any real anti-horse tactic is about as dangerous to the people using it as it is to the intended target.

Pike/Spear blocks are really effective as horses generally aren't as stupid as their riders so they will not advance into such formations.

We have developed several "drills" where we train a small squad of infantry to remove the rider from the horse safely for all parties concerned. The standard three man drill seems to work well as we have trained a number of different people in its use and this drill forms the basis of our modern medieval battle re-enactment anti cavalry drill.

We have done a bit of this "remove the rider from the horse training" too, it works fine but do make sure that the riders know how to breakfall properly first just in case the footcrew lose their balance, slip and drop you! Shocked
