I wasn't sure where to put this thread...
Rondel Daggers, does anybody make wooden training ones [within NZ]?
I was thinking would they be best made as a full peice from turned wood?
A rondel dagger made on a lathe would do the trick as you could shape it right with a ball on the point for safety..
What would be a good wood suitable and has anybody tried to make some? _________________ I like living.. |

Any kind of hardwood, and an angle grinder is a good friend to have when shaping the blade.
FWIW, make them like a real dagger, with a wooden blade. I've also used high-impact bubber castings, but hardwood has a nicer feel.
Only really much use with short weapons though.

For cheap and cheerful rolled up newspaper and some insulation tape makes very useable daggers I have made quite a few for one off classes and demos. For something better have a look at http://www.woodenswords.com/WMA/daggerroundel.htm (Note the length)
I have two of these for more serious practice. Mine are actually purpleheart wood but ash, hickory or any other hardwood will do. The groove in the "blade" make it a bit lighter but aren't really that important.
Some groups in the UK use rubber versions but I find them too limp, particularly for techniques using two hands or when facing weapons other than daggers.

Yeah, trying to achieve a good lock with a rubber dagger is a pain. More like using a banana than a weapon. |

We have a couple of rondels,
proper steel ones and the only bonus is if you use them properly
just like other daggers but if you wanted to put your knee in the you can get a bit more love more for heavy armor _________________ I mistook it for a brothel.
