I'm looking for a source of "linden" wood, or another timber variety that is appropriate for Norse kite shields, such as Alder and Poplar. I'd like to try making planks and then shields myself from logs. Does anybody know of a source for this type of timber? Preferably near Auckland, seasoned and free

Hi Inigo,
Limewood is what they call it in New Zealand. It grows all over the place but I'm not sure where you'd get it unless you got in touch with tree surgeons or the local parks people and told them you wanted some.
If you want to rive planks out of logs yourself you'll want it green, not seasoned. Rive the planks out with wedges and a froe and then let them season before you make the shield. If you split them out right they'll dry quite fast without deforming.
